BEAUTIFUL, well, let’s say, Good-looking.

Went into town to see Beautiful, the Carol King Musical, at the Curran Theater, before its Broadway opening. Just a few words:

Some really good, solid performances. I mean, that’s the simple part, finding good singing actors, and they were in abundance here.

I think the difficulty for me was in the book, and how that was organized to present the vast material of both songwriting teams,King and Geffen as well as friends and competitors Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann.

The music certainly trumps the story, which in Act I begins to feel like, Song-Group that recorded song, over and over. More review than story. It does manage to knit together as Act II gets going, and I could feel a palpable desire from the audience for the heroine

to succeed. Important in a musical! Love the music of Carol King. Brought me back to my Conservatory days, when I first started listening to Pop music. Let’s just say it worked for me!
